Mount Merapi’s alert status was lowered as of Friday evening, but people living on the slopes of the volcano were told to remain cautious of possible secondary eruptions.

Residents were also reminded about the danger of floods of mud whenever there were heavy rains at the volcano’s peak.

Villagers like Hasanuddin Sanusi have heard since they were young how the mountain they call home once blew apart in the largest eruption ever recorded - an 1815 event widely forgotten outside their region - killing 90,000 people and blackening skies on the other side of the globe.

Mbah Maridjan’s son named Merapi gatekeeper

YOGYAKARTA: The Yogyakarta administration has appointed Mas Lurah Suraksosihono, better known as Asih, to replace his father, Mbah Maridjan, as the spiritual guardian of Mount Merapi volcano.

The 44-year-old was inaugurated on Monday in a ceremony attended by 229 others who were also installed as officials of the Yogyakarta Sultanate.

Issue: Atheist arrested for blasphemy

A 30 year-old civil servant in the Dharmasraya regency of West Sumatra, identified as Alexander,
was arrested on Friday for blasphemy after creating a Facebook fan page titled Ateis Minang (Minang Atheist), which was “liked” by 1,238 Facebook users.

Dharmasraya Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Chairul Azis said that the man was arrested because of his writings on the fan page and his direct statements saying that he did not believe in God.
